In der Ouvertüre der "ersten deutschen Nationaloper" ist schon die Handlung der ganzen Oper enthalten

Geheimnisvolle unheimliche Töne tiefer Streicher zu Beginn als Synonym für die Geisterwelt des Waldes, der Einsatz von Hörnern zur Charakterisierung des fröhlichen Jägerlebens und weitere "Kopplungen" von Instrumenten und Charakteren geben in der Ouvertüre gewissermaßen eine Kurzfassung der Oper. Da die gleichen Zuweisungen auch im weiteren Verlauf der Oper verwendet werden, wird der Hörer somit vom Komponisten "geführt". Diese Form der Ouvertüre wird von nun an beispielgebend sein. Richard Wagner wird später die Kopplung von Instrumenten und Charakteren für seine "Leitmotivtechnik" verwenden. Darüber hinaus ist das alles meisterhaft vom Komponisten orchestriert worden, ein faszinierendes Werk !
